Role Of Technology In Improving Health Sector

Technology has affected all aspects of life, including health. It has drastically improved the health sector in a variety of ways. Technology, most importantly, has modernized the field of diagnostics. It is very hard for the doctor to treat the problem without precisely knowing what is wrong. This is where technology plays a significant role. The doctor is through testing etc., able to diagnose the disease.

Furthermore, the treatment available for most of the diseases has improved greatly. Technology has enabled the world to fight and end diseases like smallpox. Scientists and pharmaceuticals are constantly working to come up with antidotes for major ailments.

Moreover, patient records can now be digitized; therefore, medical centers and hospitals can easily store patient history. Also, a great issue to get timely medical aid was logistical. Now, with technological advancements, doctors do not have to be physically present to treat the patients, as many alternatives are present.

Hence, technology has had a profound impact on the health sector in several different ways:

Medical Equipment

With technology has come several laboratory services. Radiology laboratory alone has completely altered the landscape of diagnostics. With imaging equipment like CT scan, MRI etc., doctors and researchers are able to get images of the bones, vessels and organs to find any anomaly present.

Furthermore, pathology testing has been facilitated by technology as well. Diagnostic tests of all sorts are done with ease and minimum intervention to investigate into the patient’s problem. There are several diagnostic centers like Islamabad diagnostic center that are thus able to potentially save lives of people due to the presence of medical equipment that aids them in correct patient diagnosis.

Improved Medication

With advancements in technology, scientists are better able to study the disease-causing factors and come up with antidotes for them. Antibiotics for example, are being constantly evolved to cater to the ever-resilient bacteria.

Suffice to say, the progress in the field of medical technology in the form of newer drugs has the potential to improve the health of patients and the overall health system. Hence, technology has a crucial role to play in improving the medicines dispensed.

Improved Research

Research is vital for bringing out innovation in the field of diagnostics and treatment. Researchers are able to test different hypotheses since they are able to analyze the process of disease on cellular level. With the aid of technology, the world has been able to fight infectious diseases like malaria, measles, mumps and smallpox.

Furthermore, technology has played a significant part in finding cures for genetic disorders. Scientists are able to study human DNA to understand the fundamentals of the problem. For example, the technology of recombinant DNA led to the invention of insulin, thereby providing people with alternate and cheaper forms of cure.

Likewise, scientists are working to produce similar technology that could radically alter the patient’s health. CRISPR is one such technique that is in its preliminary phase, which basically sets to alter the genome to remove the problematic areas. 86 cancer patients have been treated in China using CRISPR in the trial phase.

Patient Record

Most hospitals have digitalized patients records. This way, the patient history is preserved without the hassle of physically storing them. Doctors are able to quickly look up the record to have a holistic view of patient history. Patients too are facilitated. They can carry their records in any device like their smartphones and quickly look up test results and prescriptions.

Furthermore, physical data is at risk of getting destroyed due to factors that cannot be controlled. Digital records on the other hand can be safely and cheaply backed up. Also, the data accumulated can be used in research. These are very useful in evaluating effectiveness of treatments and understand any data trends regarding disease and diagnosis.

Doctor-Patient Correspondence

There are many diseases that do not need a physical exam. Therefore, it is not necessary that the doctor has to be physically present to treat the patient. Technology, specifically in the field of telecommunications, has therefore reduced such distances. Doctors can stay in contact with their patients anywhere, everywhere.

Doctors can have sessions with their patients via video or phone call. Therefore, doctor availability has been greatly increased with technology. Not all patients have to undergo the hassle of commuting and long waiting hours to talk to their doctors. Furthermore, they can share the test results etc. over email or message, therefore, saving their and the doctor’s time.

Internet As Primary Source Of Awareness

The Internet has enabled people to research about any condition that they might face. Whilst everyone realizes that ultimately medical professionals alone should be consulted for medical aid, the plethora of information on the internet is not entirely useless. Awareness campaigns, good lifestyle practices, dietary habits etc. can all be safely promoted via internet to masses that can’t be reached otherwise. Such little preventive steps have a profound impact on the health of the entire society.

Sophistication in the treatment of diseases has been possible largely due to technology. It has enabled researchers and doctors in making more efficient forms of diagnosis and cure for the patient. Today, all the good hospitals like National Hospital Lahore are using technology to facilitate their patients and improve their health care experience, which is impossible otherwise.
